City of Johannesburg officials demolished a house in the Tladi informal settlement that blocked a transformer installation. This clears the way for electrification work under the Informal Settlement Upgrade Programme. More than 150 residents will gain a stable electricity supply after years of delays.

The City of Johannesburg’s Human Settlements Department confirmed it can now start the Tladi power project. Officials said the house had delayed the process. The department expects the work to benefit the community directly.

Joburg MMC for Human Settlements, Mlungisi Mabaso, warned against obstructing public works. “If you stand in the way of our development, we are going to deal with you one way or the other. We cannot allow one person to hinder the work that we are doing,” said Mabaso.

Residents in Tladi have waited years for reliable power. They say the house also blocked roads. Ambulances and police vehicles could not pass easily.

Resident Thandi Tshabalala spoke for many in the community. “We are happy that after all these years, we can finally get electricity. The house was also obstructing the road; ambulances could not go in and police vehicles could not pass,” she said. Tshabalala added that the community now feels its dignity restored.

Over 150 residents stand to gain from stable electricity, according to the department. Mabaso’s warning aims to prevent future delays in public projects. Residents express clear relief over the progress.

The department anticipates finishing the Tladi power project in September.
