The building holds deep meaning for the Mpondo people. It was named after Botha Sigcau, a key family member and monarch. This name made it a rare public symbol for the group.

“It was a building that bore our family name, and the Mpondo people are to a large part greatly underrepresented where public representation in the form of street names, statues, and buildings and so on are concerned, so it is a great loss,” said Prince Mbasa Sigcau. The KSD municipality is waiting for a report on the fire.

The loss goes beyond bricks and mortar. It thins the Mpondo visible legacy in the Eastern Cape, where such markers are few.

The burnt structure still poses health risks, per the Public Works and Infrastructure Department. Officials say assessments cannot happen until it is safe.

Investigators cannot enter the building yet due to these risks. The Public Works Department confirmed that no timeline exists for assessments.

Provincial authorities have not shared more on the cause probe. Local reports note the ongoing wait for details.
