South African unemployed youth have a chance to gain work experience while helping preserve the nation’s history. The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), together with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), offers the NFVF National Archives Digitisation Project under PESP Phase 6 for 2026. This program creates over 100 jobs at the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa (NARSSA) in Pretoria, Gauteng.

Programme Overview

The NFVF National Archives Digitisation Project (PESP Phase 6) is part of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme. It focuses on digitizing, preserving, and managing national archives. Participants will work in a government setting and build skills in a professional environment. The project runs through 2026, with applications closing on 08 April 2026.

Available Positions

The program has more than 100 spots across over 20 roles. Positions range from skilled archivist jobs to entry-level tasks. Here is a breakdown of key categories.

Archivist Roles

These jobs need a diploma or degree in Archival Studies or a related field.

  • Archivist: Arrangement and Description (15 posts): Organize and describe archive materials.
  • Archivist: Outreach and Publications (2 posts): Handle public outreach and create publications.
  • Archivist: Oral History (2 posts): Collect and preserve oral history records.

Assistant Archivist Roles

Most require Grade 12 or a relevant qualification.

  • Assistant Archivist: Reading Room
  • Assistant Archivist: Cartographic Material
  • Assistant Archivist: Strong Room Registers
  • Sensitive Records Assistant Archivist

Audio-Visual Preservation Roles

A diploma or degree in Film, Engineering, Audio Production, or related fields is needed.

  • Film & Video Preservation Assistants
  • Sound Preservation Assistants
  • Legal Deposit Audio-Visual Assistants

Administration and Records Roles

These need a diploma or degree in Public Administration or a related field.

  • Administration Officer
  • Records Management Officer
  • Sensitive Records Admin Officer

IT and Systems Roles

A diploma or degree in Information Technology is required.

  • Systems Administrator (MCSE certification needed)
  • IT Support Officer

Entry-Level Opportunities

Open to those with Grade 10 or Grade 12.

  • Scanner Operator
  • Archive Assistant Housekeeping
  • Conservation Assistant

Driver-Based Role

  • Principal Auxiliary Officer: Needs Grade 12, a valid Code 10 driver’s licence, and PDP.

Technical Support Role

  • Maintenance Officer: Requires a qualification in the built environment.

Minimum Requirements

  • Be 35 years old or younger.
  • Meet the specific needs of the role you choose.
