Programme Overview

Position Purpose

Key Responsibilities

Trainees take on real work from day one. You prepare locomotives and test brakes before trips. You help with train movements, shunting, and using radios or other tools to talk during runs.

You watch the train’s path and stick to safety steps. In emergencies, you pitch in to fix problems. You fill out train logs and always follow safe work habits.

Minimum Requirements

You need a Grade 12 certificate with Mathematics or Physical Science. Be at least 21 years old and at least 1.6 meters tall. Prove you are fit in body, hearing, eyesight, and mind.

You must lift heavy items and pass psychomotor tests with the Vienna Testing System. Be ready for shift work and regular health checks.

Training Requirements

The programme demands full training in theory and practice. You finish with a certificate to work alone as a Train Assistant. This sets you up for a steady job in rail.

Skills and Competencies

Know train rules, safety steps, locomotive parts, and communication gear. Learn rail routes, stations, and sidings. Build skills in handling trains, shunting, watching details, and team coordination.
