CapeNature is opening doors for young South African graduates with its Graduate Internships 2026 program. If you have a background in environmental science or related fields and want hands-on experience in conservation, these roles offer a great start. The CapeNature Graduate Internships 2026 run for 18 months and pay R120,000 per year.

Internship Overview

CapeNature manages nature reserves in the Western Cape and focuses on protecting biodiversity. The internships sit in the Biodiversity Capabilities division and cover areas like environmental management, conservation science, and GIS technology. Positions are based in Stellenbosch at Jonkershoek Nature Reserve and in Cape Town.

Available Positions

Graduate Intern: Ecological Technician (Freshwater)

This role is at Jonkershoek Nature Reserve in Stellenbosch. You will help follow the National Water Act by checking water use licenses and aiding with new applications. Your tasks include turning field data into databases, monitoring freshwater sites, doing fieldwork, and writing reports.

To qualify, you need a BSc Honours or MSc in Freshwater Ecology, Aquatic Science, Conservation Biology, or Environmental Science. Basic knowledge of the National Water Act helps, along with experience in SASS5 biomonitoring. Skills in wetland checks are a plus.

Graduate Intern: GIS Technologist

Based in the Cape Town office, this job involves collecting and checking GIS data. You will map fires in real time, build GIS databases from raw data, and help create reports on conservation. Expect work on spatial analysis and mapping with tools like GPS.

Requirements include a degree at NQF Level 7 or higher in Geomatics, Environmental Management, Conservation Science, or similar fields. You should know ArcGIS and QGIS software, plus basics of cartography and GPS.

General Requirements

All applicants must be South African citizens who graduated in the last two years and have no job. A clean criminal record is needed, plus a valid Code EB08 driver’s license. You must be ready for remote fieldwork in nature areas.
