ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowship: A Guide for African Scholars

The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) is offering an exciting opportunity for early-career researchers across Africa. The ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowship Programme provides six-month residential fellowships at designated ARUA Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and Clusters of Research Excellence (CoREs). This program aims to support emerging African researchers in conducting cutting-edge, collaborative research.

About the ARUA Fellowship Program

The ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowship Programme is supported by the Mastercard Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York. It is designed to foster high-quality research and graduate training across the African continent. The fellowship offers a unique chance for up to 42 emerging researchers to immerse themselves in a research environment for six months. This period allows for focused work on significant research projects, contributing to the broader goals of the ARUA network.

Fellowship Details and Timeline

For the upcoming fellowship year, the program offers six-month residential fellowships. The second fellowship period is scheduled from September 2026 to February 2027. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2026. Applicants must be able to commit to full-time residency at the host institution. A key aspect of this initiative is its commitment to equity, with at least 70% of all fellowships reserved for women. Additionally, applicants must be 35 years old or younger at the time of application.

Understanding ARUA and Its Network

The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) is a collaboration of leading universities in Africa. Its mission is to strengthen research and graduate education by pooling resources, expertise, and infrastructure. ARUA’s work addresses critical socio-economic challenges facing the continent. The alliance operates through 13 Centres of Excellence that support research in both natural and social sciences. These centers focus on areas like climate change, sustainable food systems, water and energy, migration, and urbanization.

In addition to the Centres of Excellence, ARUA also partners with 22 Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence. These clusters were established with the Guild of European Research Universities and align with the AU-EU Innovation Agenda. They cover a wide range of research themes, providing diverse opportunities for fellows.

Research Areas and Themes

The fellowship provides access to a rich research environment within ARUA’s network. The 13 Centres of Excellence cover thematic areas such as Water, Energy, Non-Communicable Diseases, Sustainable Food Systems, Migration and Mobility, Good Governance, and Urbanization and Habitable Cities.

The 22 Clusters of Research Excellence are organized under four main themes:

Public Health

This theme includes research on infectious diseases, multimorbidity, preparedness and response, genomics, and health and gender.

Green Transition

Research within this theme focuses on nature-based solutions, renewable energy, water resource management, and conservation biology.

Innovation and Technology

This area covers advancements in AI and data science, creative economies, and engineering for the future.

Capacities for Sciences

This theme involves research on peace, inequalities, and the politics of sustainable development.

Roles and Responsibilities of Fellows

Selected fellows will have specific duties during their six-month tenure. They are expected to conduct collaborative research under the guidance of mentors. A key deliverable is the publication of at least one high-impact journal article, either as a first author or co-author. Fellows will also present their research findings twice and participate in technical workshops. Supporting the development of new research partnerships and assisting in the dissemination of research findings through institutional platforms are also part of their responsibilities.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

To be eligible for the ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowship, applicants must meet several requirements. They must be African nationals who have completed their PhD within the last five years. Applicants must also be under 35 years old. They should hold an academic or research position at an African university, though institutions outside the ARUA network are also welcome to apply. Strong research output and a clear alignment with a specific CoE or CoRE are essential. The ability to spend six months in residence at the host institution is mandatory, and applicants should ideally have existing data or research materials relevant to their proposed project. Given the program’s commitment to gender equity, women candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Fellowship Benefits and Support

The fellowship offers a comprehensive package to support researchers. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of US$2,000. Accommodation support is provided, along with coverage for return travel to the host institution. For women researchers who require adjustment assistance, there is eligibility-based financial support. Fellows will also be provided with office space at the host CoE or CoRE. It is important to note that relocation expenses are not covered by the fellowship.

Prospective applicants must submit a complete application package through ARUA’s official online portal. The required components include a cover letter detailing academic background, motivation, preferred host institution, and residency plan. A full Curriculum Vitae (CV) with personal details, research output, and referee information is also necessary. Applicants must provide a letter of support from their home institution confirming their return after the fellowship. Proof of PhD award is required, along with a concept note of no more than 1,500 words outlining a feasible six-month research plan. Two samples of academic writing, distinct from the doctoral thesis, must be submitted. Finally, a copy of the applicant’s passport biodata page is needed.
