The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) is offering a valuable opportunity for unemployed graduates to gain practical experience in the health product regulatory sector. The SAHPRA Internship Programme for 2026/2027 provides six positions for individuals looking to build a career in this important field. This 12-month program offers a monthly stipend and hands-on experience in regulating medicines, medical devices, and more.

About SAHPRA

SAHPRA is the national body responsible for ensuring that health products available in South Africa are safe, effective, and of good quality. Established under the Medicines and Related Substances Act, the organization plays a critical role in protecting public health. Its work involves the regulation of a wide range of products, including medicines, medical devices, scheduled substances, and in-vitro diagnostic devices.

Available Internship Opportunities

For the 2026/2027 financial year, SAHPRA has announced its Graduate Internship Programme, offering six internship positions. These roles are divided between two key units within the authority:

  • Health Products Authorisations Unit: This unit has five internship posts available. Interns here will likely be involved in the processes related to approving and authorizing health products.
  • Inspectorate and Regulatory Compliance Unit: This unit offers one internship post. This role will focus on ensuring that health products and their manufacturers comply with regulatory standards.

Minimum Requirements for Applicants

To be eligible for the SAHPRA Internship Programme, candidates must meet several criteria. These requirements are designed to ensure that interns are well-suited for the program and have the foundational qualifications needed.

  • Citizenship: Applicants must be South African citizens.
  • Employment Status: Candidates must be unemployed graduates.
  • Previous Internship Experience: Applicants must not have participated in any internship program before.
  • Educational Background: A Matric certificate is a mandatory requirement. Additionally, applicants must possess a National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Sciences, Health Sciences, or a related field.
  • Qualification Level: The qualification must be at NQF Level 6 or NQF Level 7 and recognized by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Foreign qualifications will require a SAQA evaluation certificate.

Key Responsibilities During the Internship

Interns at SAHPRA will gain exposure to various administrative and regulatory functions. The specific duties will depend on the unit to which the intern is assigned, but generally include:

  • Assisting with the allocation of applications and responding to queries.
  • Updating and maintaining databases and tracking systems.
  • Capturing evaluation reports and monitoring workloads.
  • Tracking application statuses and compiling statistics and reports.
  • Supporting compliance checks and assisting during internal and external audits.
  • Liaising with internal stakeholders.
  • Managing records and supporting workflow administration.

Internship Duration and Stipend

The SAHPRA Internship Programme is a full-time commitment lasting for 12 months. Successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend of R16,666.66. This stipend aims to support interns while they gain valuable professional experience.
