In this article, you will know more about the Gombe State University Grading System, NUC 5 point grading system in Nigeria Universities, how Gombe State University aggregate, grades/scores are calculated, and also know how to add and Calculate Your First (1st) and Second (2nd) Semester Test and Examination GP, CGPA & GPA on your own at the end of the academic session.

Gombe State University (NUC) 5 Point Grading System/Scales Overview

In the National Universities Commission (NUC) standard, our higher institutions make use of Cumulative Grade Point Averages to measure Academic Excellence. We are going to show you how to calculate CGPA in Nigerian Universities.

It is vital that all university students, especially Freshers, study and learn how to calculate their GPA upon release of each semester’s result and to also make up the cumulative at the end of every session. Doing this will help you evaluate your academic performance from time to time.

Now Nigerian universities are seeing the consequences of their varied grading systems as they affect students’ chances of admission in and out of the country.

Brief Details About Gombe State University “Pass” Degree Certificate

One of the issues in the Gombe State University grading system is that of the ‘pass’ degree. Education experts note that ‘pass’ is a class in a (five-point) grading system.

It is the last pass class to which the least pass grade point/CGPA of one is automatically assigned by virtue of being the last pass class.

Similarly, in a (four-point) grading system, the last pass class to which the least pass grade point/CGPA of one is automatically assigned by virtue of being the last pass class is the third class if the same nomenclatures are used in both cases.

For a (six-point) grading system, the last pass class to which the least pass grade point/CGPA of one is automatically assigned by virtue of being the last pass class will probably be called a ‘low pass’ if the same nomenclatures are used in both cases, argued Omotosho.

Pass degrees are still being awarded in many advanced countries to date. Many institutions in the United Kingdom still award ordinary pass degrees which are lower than pass (honours) degrees that are being condemned in Nigeria today.

“If Nigerian employers can employ graduates with American Bachelor degrees which are essentially unclassified as Nigerian universities do, then, it does not make sense to disadvantage graduates from Nigerian universities by simply cancelling pass (honours) degree.

There are many professionals whose basic academic qualification is the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE); yet, they are admitted into employment market at the same level, if not even higher than degree holders by some employers of labour in Nigeria.

Therefore, ‘pass’ as a class of degree cannot be condemned simply because the least grade point/CGPA of one is assigned to it.

Gombe State University Students Assessment System

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT  :       30%

END-OF-SEMESTER EXAMINATION: 70%

The Continuous Assessment component consists of take-home assignments, class quizzes and tests, term papers, and project work. This component gives students the chance to demonstrate their abilities on a wider variety of learning tasks and a broader variety of work environments than is possible under formal examination conditions. For example, through Continuous Assessment students can learn the values and processes of teamwork, plan and solve real-life problems.

CGPA Scale in Nigerian Universities

Performance in semester examinations and assessments for courses/subjects/modules are classified into letter Grades (from A, B, C, D, E, to F) which represent a range of scores or marks a student can obtain. A particular grade point is assigned to these grades, see below.

How to Calculate Your Gombe State University Grade Point Average (GPA)

Every Course/subject/module carries a fixed number of Credit Units (CU). Quality points (QP) are derived from multiplying the Credit Units (CU) for a course by the Grade Point (GP) earned by the student in that course.

Eg. If in a 3 Credit Unit course, a student scores 63% which is a B with a Grade Point of 4, the Quality points for the student in that course is 3 x 4 = 12.

How to Calculate Your Gombe State University Grade Point Average (GPA) ‘

GPS is derived by dividing the Total Quality point (TQP) for the semester by the Total Credit Unit (TCU) for that semester.

Eg. If in a semester, a student earned 56 quality points for 18 Credit Units, the students GPA is 56/18 = 3.11

How to Calculate Gombe State University Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

CGPA is derived by adding the Total Quality Points (TQP) for all semesters to date and dividing by the Total Credit Units (TCU) for all semesters to date.

Eg. If a student earns a QP of 56 for 18 CU in the first semester and earns QP of 67 for 20 CU in the second semester, His CGPA is TQP/TCU = (56 + 67) / (18 + 20) = 123/38 =3.24
