South African Health Department Offers 24-Month Graduate Internships for Unemployed Graduates

The National Department of Health is offering a valuable opportunity for unemployed South African graduates to gain practical experience through its Graduate Internship Programme for 2026-2028. This 24-month program is designed to equip graduates with essential workplace skills and occupational training within the public service sector, aiming to significantly boost their employability. With a monthly stipend of R8,174.78, this initiative provides a structured pathway for young professionals to enter the workforce and contribute to public health.

Available Internship Opportunities

The Department of Health has a wide range of internship positions available across various fields, catering to graduates with specific diploma or degree qualifications. Each opportunity is designed to offer hands-on experience relevant to its specific discipline.

Human Resources Management and Development Internship

There are four positions available for those with a Diploma (NQF 6) in Human Resources Management or Human Resources Development. This internship will provide exposure to the core functions of managing and developing an organization’s workforce.

Organisational Development Internship

One position is open for graduates holding a Diploma (NQF 6) in Management Services, Operations Management, or Production Management. This role focuses on improving organizational efficiency and effectiveness.

Employment Relations Internship

A single internship is offered in Employment Relations for individuals with a Diploma (NQF 6) in Labour Relations. This position will involve learning about workplace conflict resolution and employee rights.

Financial Management and Accounting Internship

Three internships are available for graduates with a Diploma (NQF 6) in Financial Management or Accounting. These roles will offer practical experience in managing public sector finances and accounting practices.

Supply Chain Management Internship

Four positions are open for those with a Diploma (NQF 6) in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Public Management, Purchasing, or Transport Management. This internship will cover the procurement and management of goods and services.

Internal Audit Internship

Three internships are available for graduates with a Diploma (NQF 6) in Internal Auditing or Risk Management. These roles will focus on evaluating internal controls and risk management processes within the department.

Information Communication and Technology Internship

Four positions are offered for graduates with a Diploma (NQF 6) in Computer Science or Information Technology. This internship will provide experience in managing and supporting the department’s IT infrastructure and systems.

Communication Internship

Two internships are available for graduates with a Diploma (NQF 6) in Journalism, Marketing and Communication, or Communication. These roles will involve supporting the department’s public outreach and information dissemination efforts.

Legal Services Internship

Three internships are offered for individuals holding an LLB Degree (NQF 6) in Law. This position will provide valuable experience in legal matters within the public health sector.

Office of the Director-General Internship

Two positions are available for graduates with a Diploma (NQF 6) in Management, Business Management, Administration, Public Management, Office Management, or a related administration qualification. These roles will offer exposure to high-level administrative functions within the Director-General’s office.

General Requirements for Applicants

To be eligible for the Graduate Internship Programme, applicants must meet several key criteria. They must be unemployed South African citizens who have completed Grade 12 (NQF 4) and hold the specific qualification required for the internship they are applying for. Crucially, individuals who have previously participated in any internship program will not be considered. A genuine interest in gaining work experience within the Public Service sector is also a requirement.
