Are you a young South African looking to start a career in mechanics? The AFGRI Equipment Apprenticeships 2026 offer 40 exciting spots for unemployed youth to train as Tractor Mechanics or Earthmoving Mechanics. This program runs for three years and mixes hands-on work with classroom learning.

Apprenticeship Overview

AFGRI Equipment is a major John Deere dealer in South Africa. They provide these apprenticeships to help people gain skills in repairing tractors and earthmoving machines. The program starts with a six-month probation period where both you and the company check if it’s a good fit. You can leave or be released during this time if needed.

Programme Details

There are 40 positions available under reference number AO-2345. The training lasts three years, but it can go up to four. You will focus on one of two trades: Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic. Training is free if you complete it successfully, but you must repeat failed parts at your own cost.

AFGRI experts will teach you about their products, and you will get internal technical sessions. Groups like AgriSETA and merSETA support the program to ensure it meets industry standards.

Subjects like Physical Science, Engineering Graphics & Design, Diesel Trade Theory, or Motor Trade Theory give you an edge.

Key Responsibilities

As an apprentice, you will learn to fix and maintain equipment. You will help with stock control, serve customers, and handle workshop tasks. These duties build your skills step by step under experienced guides.

Skills and Competencies

Success comes from paying close attention to details, working well in a team, staying motivated, and meeting deadlines. Discipline and a goal-focused attitude help you thrive in this hands-on role.

Locations

AFGRI branches are spread across South Africa. You could train in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State, Western Cape, or KwaZulu-Natal. Specific towns include Polokwane, Nelspruit, George, Worcester, and Pietermaritzburg.

How to Apply

Applications close on 30 September 2026. Click here to apply. Fill out the screening questions and assessments. Prepare for possible interviews.

Important Notes

If you do not hear back in 30 days after the deadline, your application did not succeed. After training, you must work back a period for the company. Leaving early might mean paying back training costs.
