About the Capitec External Bursary Programme

The Capitec External Bursary Programme aims to support students who demonstrate academic excellence and a keen interest in fields crucial to the future of banking and technology. Capitec believes in nurturing future talent by offering financial aid alongside valuable workplace exposure and mentorship. This bursary helps students focus on their academic journey while connecting them with a company that values innovation and client-focused solutions.

The bursary is specifically for the 2027 academic year and requires students to be studying full-time. Beyond financial support, recipients can expect development opportunities designed to prepare them for the professional world. This programme helps bridge the gap between academic learning and career readiness, ensuring graduates are well-equipped to enter the workforce.

About Capitec

Capitec stands as one of South Africa’s leading banking institutions, recognized for its commitment to innovation, simplicity, accessibility, and affordability. The bank’s core mission is to develop financial solutions that empower clients to manage their money more effectively. Capitec actively invests in young talent through various programmes, including bursaries, internships, and development initiatives, all aimed at preparing students for careers in banking, technology, data analysis, and business management.

What the Bursary Covers

The Capitec External Bursary provides financial support for several key educational expenses. While the exact details are confirmed upon receiving the official award letter, it typically covers tuition fees, registration costs, accommodation, textbooks, and a meal allowance. This comprehensive support aims to alleviate the financial burden on students, allowing them to concentrate on their studies and personal development.

Additional Support

Beyond financial aid, successful bursary recipients gain access to valuable non-monetary support. This includes work readiness training, onboarding experiences, and opportunities for personal development. Capitec also focuses on helping students build their professional profiles and offers exposure to the company’s innovative and growth-oriented business environment.

Fields of Study Covered

This bursary programme is designed for students in their first, second, or third year of full-time study. The supported fields of study are those that align with Capitec’s focus on technology and finance. These include Actuarial Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Digital Marketing, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Quantitative Management, and Statistics.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the Capitec External Bursary, applicants must be South African citizens. This opportunity is open to current Grade 12 learners who plan to study full-time in 2027, as well as those who have completed Matric in 2025 and are currently on a gap year. Applicants must be registered or intend to register for full-time studies at a tertiary institution accredited by the DHET or CHE. The bursary is specifically for those pursuing qualifications at NQF Level 7 or higher, such as a Bachelor’s Degree or Honours qualification.

Academic Requirements

Applicants who are currently in Grade 12 must have achieved a Bachelor’s Pass with a minimum average of 65% or above in their final exams. For students already in tertiary education, a minimum academic average of 65% or above is required for the latest completed academic years, including results from 2025 and the current academic year (2026). Meeting these academic benchmarks is essential for a successful application.

Who Cannot Apply?

This bursary is not intended for students pursuing qualifications at lower NQF levels, including N4, N5, N6, Higher Certificates, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, Master’s Degrees, or Doctoral Degrees. Furthermore, students enrolled at TVET Colleges, Community Colleges, Graduate Schools, Business Schools, or distance-learning institutions like UNISA are not eligible for this specific programme.

Preference Criteria

Capitec may give preference to applicants who align with the company’s transformation and employment equity goals. Additionally, candidates who are on track to complete their qualification within the standard timeframe and are not repeating years (not on N+1 or higher) may receive preference. These criteria help ensure the bursary supports students committed to timely academic success.

Bursary Renewal Conditions

The bursary is renewable on an annual basis. Renewal is contingent upon maintaining strong academic performance, active engagement in development activities, and the availability of sponsor budgets. It is important for recipients to understand that securing the bursary in the first year does not guarantee funding for the entire duration of their studies. Consistent effort and academic achievement are key to continued support.

Work-Back Obligation

Successful bursary recipients are required to complete a work-back period for every year they receive funding from Capitec. Failure to fulfill this work-back obligation may result in the recipient being required to refund the total value of the bursary benefits received, along with interest at the prime rate. This condition underscores Capitec’s investment in developing future professionals for its organization.

Disclosure Requirements

Honesty and accuracy are paramount throughout the application and award process. Applicants and recipients must provide truthful information. If it is discovered that a student is not studying full-time or has undisclosed paid employment, their bursary contract or offer may be terminated. In such cases, they might be required to refund all bursary benefits. This also applies to any false statements made during interviews or after the bursary has been awarded.

Selection Process

The selection process may involve several stages, depending on the applicant’s current academic standing. Candidates might undergo initial screening, shortlisting based on eligibility and academic merit, followed by interviews. Psychometric assessments may also be part of the evaluation. Applicants should ensure all submitted information is accurate and complete to navigate these stages successfully.

Required Documents

Applicants must attach all necessary documents when completing the online application. These typically include a certified copy of your South African ID, your latest academic results, and Grade 12 results if already completed. Proof of registration or acceptance at a tertiary institution may also be required, along with a full academic record for current tertiary students. Any additional documents requested on the Capitec bursary application portal must also be submitted. Incomplete applications or those with misrepresentations will not be considered.
