About Digital Opportunity Trust Kenya

Digital Opportunity Trust Kenya, or DOT Kenya, started in 2005 and registered in 2007 as a non-profit group. It helps young people from underserved areas gain digital literacy, leadership skills, innovation, and tools to succeed in the digital world. As part of the DOT Global network, it works in Africa, the Middle East, and the UK, supporting thousands of youth to build better lives and lead in their communities.

Program Overview

The DOT Climate Program trains young leaders to drive climate action at the local level. It sees youth as key players who can change behaviors, rally communities for sustainability, create local solutions, raise awareness, and lead projects. Climate Champions get training in climate topics, research tools, community work, digital skills, coaching, and leadership to engage people effectively.

Cisco Climate Project Details

Cisco funds this project to grow youth-led climate efforts in Kenya and Jordan. DOT Kenya will select digitally skilled youth to become Climate Champions. They receive a climate curriculum, participatory action research toolkit, mobilization skills, digital advocacy, coaching methods, and communication training. After training, they identify community problems and build practical solutions together, stressing local control and long-term results.

Role of Climate Champions

Climate Champions work with DOT Kenya to teach about climate change, build community strength, promote green habits, and launch local solutions. This short-term role suits youth passionate about sustainability, advocacy, digital tools, and community growth. They serve in Nairobi and nearby areas.

Training Structure

The program starts with a 4-week hybrid training in June 2026. It includes three weeks of online sessions and one week in person. Training covers climate action, research, community engagement, and leadership through hands-on activities.

Key Responsibilities

Climate Champions handle these main tasks:

1. Conduct Community Surveys
   They run baseline surveys to spot local climate and environmental issues. This helps understand community needs from the start.

2. Mobilize Community Members
   Champions coach people on green practices and ways to handle climate risks. They encourage active involvement.

3. Lead Participatory Action Research Groups
   Each forms and guides a group of 7-9 members. They use group methods to explore issues.

4. Gather Community Insights
   They collect views with participatory tools to find top climate priorities.

5. Co-Design Climate Solutions
   Working with communities, they create and start tailored action plans.

6. Present Outcomes
   Champions share results, lessons, and solutions from their projects.

7. Reporting and Continuous Learning
