President Cyril Ramaphosa has noted the National Prosecuting Authority’s decision to charge Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola. The charges link him to the irregular awarding of a multi-million-rand tender to Medicare 24. This affects Masemola, 16 arrested police officials, and the South African public who rely on police integrity. It matters now because Masemola is the most senior official charged in a scandal that started in 2024.

The NPA decided to charge Masemola over the tender issue. He is expected to appear in court soon.

The tender went to Medicare 24, a company owned by Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala, who faces criminal charges.

An investigation that began in 2024 has led to the arrest of 16 police officials. They appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. Fifteen received bail between R40,000 and R80,000.

The Presidency announced Ramaphosa’s note on the charges. Police statements confirm the details.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said:

General Fannie Masemola remains committed to upholding the rule of law and the integrity of the office he serves. He has taken note of the charges against him and has pledged full cooperation with all lawful process that seeks to address wrongdoing. This is the right necessary course to ensure we restore public confidence in our institution.

Masemola had earlier distanced himself from any wrongdoing in the case.

The probe started in 2024. A parliamentary ad hoc committee heard details on how the R360m SAPS tender was awarded to Matlala.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu ordered SAPS to investigate the R360m contract given to Matlala. Masemola told the inquiry about this.

Reports cover the parliamentary ad hoc committee details and Mchunu’s order.

Ramaphosa plans to address the matter in line with the law.

Masemola’s charge as the most senior official could erode public confidence in police. The police spokesperson pledged steps to restore that trust.

This ties into a broader police crisis. Trending news includes the ad hoc committee on corruption in the criminal justice system.

Ramaphosa’s response follows legal steps. Police assure Masemola is cooperating fully.

His court appearance is coming up soon.

Key near-term steps include:

  • Masemola’s court date.
  • Updates from the parliamentary inquiry.
  • Presidency’s legal address.
  • Ongoing topic timeline for coverage.
