A fire broke out at the Botha Sigcau building in Mthatha CBD on Tuesday night. The King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) district municipality faces uncertainty as firefighters work to extinguish the blaze. Employees who worked there and provincial public works officials are affected. The municipality awaits a report on the cause and next steps, which matters now as the fire continues.

The fire started right opposite the municipal offices. Firefighters are still battling to fully put it out. EWN reporter Nombuso Mabaso shared video footage showing the flames ravaging much of the building.

Municipal spokesperson Olwethu Mabovula said they do not want to speculate.

“We don’t want to speculate as to what state the fire but reports that we will be getting during the day will bring like as to what actually happened,” Mabovula stated.

This keeps focus on verified details from the municipality.

The Botha Sigcau building belongs to provincial public works. It sits in the heart of Mthatha CBD in the Eastern Cape. The KSD municipality is in this district.

Mabovula confirmed the ownership. Officials have not released more on the building’s history or past issues. All info comes from her statements.

The fire disrupts municipal operations nearby. Employees from the building now face unclear futures.

“We are hopeful that public works will be able to give us a full report, as this building belongs to them and also what happens to the employees that were working in this particular building,” said Mabovula.

No one reports injuries yet. The building’s damage level remains unknown until the report.

The municipality waits for a full report today. Provincial government officials will advise on next steps.

Mabovula noted they seek guidance from public works. Firefighters aim to contain the blaze soon. Updates depend on these developments.
