Are you a young South African looking to start a career in law enforcement? The Western Cape Government Traffic Officer Bursaries 2026 offer a great chance for Grade 12 graduates to train as traffic officers. This 12-month program provides full-time study, a monthly stipend, and hands-on skills in road safety.

Bursary Overview

The Western Cape Mobility Department runs the Student Cadet Traffic Officer Bursary Programme 2026. It leads to a Further Education and Training Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement. Training starts on 08 June 2026 at Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell and lasts 12 months. Applicants receive a monthly stipend of R5 000, but no accommodation or meals. This is a training bursary, not a job guarantee.

You must meet these basic requirements to qualify:

  • Hold a Grade 12 certificate.
  • Have a valid Code B (manual) driver’s licence.
  • Be physically fit with no criminal record.
  • Be under 35 years old.
  • Have no visible tattoos or body piercings, except ear piercings for females.

Shortlisted candidates face extra steps. These include a medical certificate, medical checks, psychological tests, drug tests, fitness tests, driving assessments, written tests, and interviews.

Training happens at Gene Louw Traffic College. After completion, you could work at one of these traffic centres:

Skills You Need

The program looks for people with certain traits. Good communication in at least two official languages helps a lot. You should also show strong interpersonal skills, the ability to handle pressure, confidence, assertiveness, and teamwork.

Responsibilities After Training

Once trained, traffic officers enforce road traffic laws and promote safety. They control traffic, prevent crime, handle admin tasks, and work shifts, including nights and weekends if needed.
